In Canada, each province and territory is in charge of their own education system. A study permit is usually valid for the length of your study program, plus an extra 90 days. This extra time lets you prepare to leave Canada or apply to extend your stay.
If you can’t finish your courses before the date on your permit, you must apply to extend your stay as a student. If you finish your studies early, your permit will stop being valid 90 days after you complete your studies (no matter what day is printed on the study permit).
You have completed your studies either
on the date you get the first notification from your school (such as an email, letter, transcript, etc.) or when you get your degree, diploma or certificate.
You must prove provide proof of the date you got one of these.
The expiry date on your study permit tells when you have to stop studying. This date could be the length of your:
a. program, plus 90 extra days
b. pre-requisite courses plus 90 extra days (if you were conditionally accepted by your school) or
c. Passport minus 30 days, if your passport will expire before you can finish your studies.
In order to study in Canada, you will need to obtain a Canadian study permit, which serves as a Canadian student visa for the duration of your stay. You do not need a Canadian study permit if your course or program lasts six months or less.
If you’d like to get a part-time job to help support yourself while studying in Canada, you can now qualify to work on or off-campus for up to 20 hours during university semesters and full-time during breaks such as the winter or summer holidays, without the need for a work permit.
To qualify, you must:
1. Have a valid study permit
2. Be a full-time student
3. Be enrolled at a designated learning institution at post-secondary level or, in Quebec, a vocational program at secondary level
4. Be studying in an academic, vocational or professional training program that leads to a degree, diploma or certificate that is at least six months in duration.
Your study permit will become invalid 90 days after you have completed your study program, so you’ll need to acquire a post-graduation work permit if you want to stay in Canada after your studies and seek work. This is valid for three years. For advice on finding a job after university, please download our guide.
Unless you come from an English-speaking country, Canadian universities will require you to submit proof of English language proficiency. Accepted language tests are:
