Skilled Independent visa (subclass 189) (Points-tested) stream

With this visa, you can live and work permanently anywhere in Australia and eligible family members can be included in your application. This is a permanent visa and allows visa-holders to remain in Australia indefinitely with full work rights.

To qualify for a Skilled visa, applicants (or their partner) must be able to satisfy the basic visa requirements related to age, English language ability, occupation, skills, qualification, health and character.

You must have a skills assessment that shows you have the skills and qualifications to work in that occupation. You must be able to meet the points score on your invitation letter. This score will be 60 or more. You can show you have Competent English test from an approved English language test provider
You might be eligible to apply for this visa if invited. You must also have:

a. nominated an occupation that is on the relevant skilled occupation list
b. obtained a suitable skills assessment for that occupation
c. not yet turned 50 years of age
d. achieved the score specified in your letter of invitation based on the factors in the points test
e. at least qualified with competent English.

You have achieved a score of at least 6 in each of the four test components (speaking, reading, listening and writing) in an International English Language Testing System (IELTS) test that has been undertaken in the three years immediately prior to lodging the visa application.

Alternative English language tests will be accepted. Applicants should obtain the IELTS equivalent in any of the approved English language test provider, OET, TOEFL iBT, PTE Academic and Cambridge English: Advanced (CAE).

The holder of the (Sub-class 189) Immigration Permit is entitled to reside and get professionally involved on a permanent basis anywhere throughout the nation.

A successful applicant,
a. can stay in Australia indefinitely
b. work and study in Australia
c. Can use in Medicare, Australia's scheme for health-related care and expenses
d. sponsor eligible relatives for permanent residence
e. Multiple entry to Australia for five years
f. apply for Australian citizenship after 4 years

A successful applicant is given a 5 year multiple entry visa to live and work in Australia. You only need to live in Australia for 2 of the 5 years to have the visa reissued for a further 5 years. Alternatively, you can spend 4 consecutive years in Australia and be eligible for citizenship.
